Poetry

Yellow EyesJoan L. Van Vels

We've roamed the wild countryMy beautiful yellow eyes,Side by side we've huntedShadows dancing on northern skies.
There have been times of plentyWe were content and serene,Peacefully sleepingDangers few and far between.
We've also known much hungerRibs protruding from each side,Mournfully we howledWhen our starving cubs had died.
And then there was our first winterRomping thru the glistening snow,Tasting each crystal snowflakeFalling gently to and fro.
Ah my dear, sweet yellow eyesI've known no greater love,Without you, I am nothingOur wild souls are one.
And now you lay there dyingSteel jaws upon your frame,Life's blood slowly seepingI whimper your sweet name.
Helpless, I watch you struggleChest heaving with labored breath,Steel jaws clenching tighterWinds whisper the song of death.
The blood has now stopped flowingI know the time is near,And you will forever leave meMy love, my life, my dear.
And now my world is silentYour struggles now have ceased,I lay my head upon youAnd know you are at peace.
Perhaps your soul has liftedTo skies where eagles soar,And there you'll greet your brothersTo run with them forever more.
And someday I shall find youIn the heaven's so far above,And when our wild soul's uniteThere'll be no greater love.

This weekend it took me forever to choose a poem that I wanted to post. Instead of choosing a poem about life or death, I decided to choose a poem about a wolf. When I was in eighth grade, I had a friend who was obsessed in wolves. Because of her, I started to get interest in wolves and today I figured out it would be great to post a poem about wolf.

I like this poem because it shows the life of a wolf. I like how the author described the wolves. I love that the author used personification to show a clear image for a wolf's life. This poem is like a short story of a wolf's life and that is why I like it. At the end, the wolf dies alone and it seems so sad and lonely. While reading this poem I could actually picture this wolf's life. First, with joy and happiness, living it's life with whole effort and in the end all the traces all gone with it's death. It was so sad at the end yet I loved this poem because the wordings were beautiful detailed.

What a beautiful poem! The emotion that is evoked through the narrative is so powerful. I love the last stanza where the wolf dreams of his mate soaring with the eagles.
